Personal Statement

My primary interest is in coral reef ecology, conservation, and education. My interest in coral reefs began in 2003 when I was doing research on the Great Barrier Reef. It is a truly spectacular place and I was moved by the impending threats to the reef ecosystem, including the impact of tourism, the effects of global warming, and agricultural runoff. As part of my contribution to education about coral reefs I hope to write a childrens book on reef life. My other interests include research on the emotional and spiritual connection between women and the ocean, the implementation of corridors between rainforest fragments, integration of traditional ecological knowledge with environmental research, the use of gardens and buffer strips to filter agricultural runoff, and restoration ecology.
