Personal Statement
I am a grad student at Antioch New England pursuing a Masters in Environmental Studies with and emphasis in Environmental Education. I sought out CTEC to further my professional skills by working for an organization/program seeking to build and strengthen their community by providing excellent service in the area of conservation education. After spending a year and a half of my life in sub-Sahara Africa I developed a deep love for tropical areas—the diversity of place, people, wildlife and landscape. I am thrilled to be joining CTEC for the 2005 year!
Employment Experience
Fall 2004—2005, Teacher/Naturalist
National Environmental Education Development (NEED)
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Act as a residential teacher/naturalist in a converted Coast Guard Station used by the Cape Cod school districts for 3-5 day environmental education programs. Work as one of 4 instructors teaching fifth grade classrooms various ecological concepts in marine, forest, swamp and salt marsh environments.
Responsibilities included:
- Lesson planning for nature walks in diverse environments
- Supervising students during lessons, meals and overnight
- Creating and leading evening programs
- Assisting with maintenance of school facility
Summer 2004, Outdoor Adventure Specialist Co-Director
Iroquois Springs Camp, NY
Responsibilities included:
- Responsible for the direction and scheduling of 6 other OA Specialists
- Acting as an active and creative facilitator to young people ages 8-16 on a challenge course (ropes and climbing wall)
- Providing safe and effective outdoor recreational activities
- Planning overnights including: backpacking, camping and canoeing trips
Fall 2002-Spring 2004, Naturalist
Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School, Wrightwood, California
Naturalist responsible for establishing curriculum for 5th and 6th graders participating in a weeklong residential outdoor science school. Creating stimulating, creative and educational lessons in biology, natural history, botany and geology.
Responsibilities included:
- Leading a group of 14-24 fifth or sixth graders in 6 hour hikes
- Administering activities, lessons and games
- Enthusiasm to lead songs, sing, play instruments, dance and act
- Extensive knowledge of the mixed pine/oak forest and chaparral ecosystems
- Coordinating high school and parent cabin leaders who supervise children in cabins
Summer 2002, Camp Counselor
Super Kids Day Camp
Sonoma State University
Responsibilities included:
- Encouraging healthy and empowering communication with children
- Designing activities, game and initiatives for ages 6-12
- Working with a staff of 16 other counselors
- Monitoring children while participating in biweekly swimming
- Supervising groups ranging from 7-30 children
