Diane Milliken, MS student
Project Assistant, US Team Since the completion of her degree program at Antioch, Diane is working as a Residential Energy Consultant for Horizon-Residential Energy Services. I complete energy audits on existing homes, work with interested builders to ensure their homes will meet and/or exceed state Energy Code, Energy Star, Tax Credit or LEED standards. I also act as third party auditor on exisiting homes for financial institutions that negotiate Energy Efficient Mortgages. It is very exciting and rewarding work. Personal Statement:I grew up in part on the Maine coast, within arm's length of the state's largest salt marsh and compelling sandy beaches, where I developed an intrinsic sense of connection to the littoral landscape. My neighborhood, upon being discovered as an ideal "bedroom community" to Portland, experienced unprecedented growth and development, which changed not only the physical shape of the landscape, but fragmented its cultural and ecological identities. The increasingly plagued ecosystem in my backyard, and injured sense of community within my hometown, has inspired me to investigate holistic management approaches that thoughtfully integrate and support ecology, economics, culture, politics and advocacy in a way that benefits both the community and the environment. Based on the exact or comparable infrastructure of a special area management plan (SAMP), I would like to work with urban and rural coastal communities in not only New England, but the Tropics as well, to successfully assess, protect, utilize and plan the future use of their coastal resources. The SAMP will incorporate site-specific policy for citizens, businesses and all levels of government to take part in, and will include recommended actions for long-term cultural and environmental conservation, with an emphasis on livelihood, and floral and faunal habitat preservation and corridor creation. My work in the Tropics began with a field study trip to Honduras in May 2005.
