Coastal Connections: Linking Research and Education in Tropical Coastal Systems

Coastal ConnectionThe Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation hosted its 5th annual symposium, "Coastal Connections: Linking Research and Education in Tropical Coastal Systems," at Antioch University New England on Saturday, November 3rd, 2007. The purpose of this symposium was to bring together researchers, educators and advocates from New England and tropical coastal systems. They discussed contemporary applied research and how and why we should bring that research to the classroom and general public.

This year's symposium was a great success gathering together 65 individuals representing 24 institutions and organizations. Over 18 speakers presented research and education opportunities to a diverse audience of educators, advocates, conservation biologists and outreach coordinators.

Chris ParsonsKeynote speaker, E.C.M. Parsons began our day by addressing the linkages between New England and the tropics as well as the need to merge research and education. This theme was continued throughout our day in both our panel and individual presentations.

The day ended with a wrap-up session designed to encourage discussion between tropical and New England researchers and educators. It is our hope that these 'coastal connections' will continue to be fruitful in the future.
